I don’t think that the general public truly understands how Restaurant Owners truly feel about Yelp. I guess all other Social Media Sites too. However, Yelp has become synonymous with negativity. I am grateful that for as many negative review/response; we get 2 positive ones. However, the impact is still felt.
Having been in this industry for such a long time and dealing with clients far and wide and very varied, I’ve come to pretty know whom I will have issues with during the Event. Most Cases, these are Guests and not Hosts. Most Cases, it is liquor related or as a result of liquor.
On separate Occasions, I’ve had a Guest say that they will “Yelp” me. That I’m “nasty’ to customers. It’s almost a “WELL, if you give me the drink, I won’t” scenario. Seriously dude, I don’t care. I’m writing this tonight because it does bother me.
I’ve had someone once write that I was mean to guests. I re-live the moments in my head as to what I could’ve done and somehow I always come to the moment where I refused someone a drink. I HAVE THAT RIGHT! Guests don’t understand that NYS Liquor Authority granted me that right. If I feel that you’ve had enough, I don’t have to serve you.
We are set up as a SERVICE ONLY Bar. I have ample Service Staff and have never had a complaint from a Host. My Wait Staff are available to get you drinks. So when I say, you can’t sit at the bar, the waiters will come to you, they get annoyed. Some Guests want to come to have shots. PS: I also have the right to refuse to serve shots at any event.
The threat of a Yelp Review is so un-settling and un-necessary.
What the General Public don’t get is that Yelp gives you the platform but also gives the Venues the right to pay to take away your freedom of expression on that platform. I don’t pay, nor do a lot of my acquaintances in the industry but many do. The General Public can do so much harm to a Business with a rant based on something which could have been resolved in person, in most cases.
Again, this is my personal Blog and in no way does it reflect the views of anyone outside my Chef and I.
